Adults who require comprehensive psychiatric assessment and treatment to stabilize their symptoms may enter one of our short-term inpatient programs.

Each inpatient program provides the patient with a closely supervised and structured environment. Patients may admitted for a wide variety of psychiatric disorders such as:
- Major depressive disorder
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Substance use disorder
- Schizophrenia and other serious psychiatric conditions
Length of stay varies, depending upon the nature of the disorder. Typically, patients will remain hospitalized for three to five days.
ADULT INPATIENT PROGRAMS

Adult Inpatient Unit
Patients (male and female) who require comprehensive psychiatric assessment and treatment to stabilize their psychiatric symptoms may enter a short-term program on the Adult Psychiatric Unit. This unit provides a highly supervised and structured environment to assist in stabilizing his/her psychiatric crisis. Patients are admitted for a variety of disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders including schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and other serious psychiatric conditions.
Services include comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and pharmacotherapy. Therapeutic services include individual, group and family counseling using an Adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy model. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is also available. When a patient’s symptoms have stabilized, discharge planning is provided for a smooth transition back into the community which includes coordination for outpatient appointments for psychiatry, counseling, and other community agencies.
The Adult Inpatient Unit has 24-hour nursing and on-call physicians. Additionally, each patient’s team will include their family members, mental health therapists, clergy, social workers, Certified Nursing Assistants, mental health specialists, discharge planners, pharmacists, dieticians, physical and occupational therapists, and recreational therapists.

Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit
The Healthy Minds – Chestnut Ridge Center Intensive Care Unit (CRIC) is a secure acute care unit that provides a safe environment for individuals having severe psychiatric symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, suicidal/homicidal thoughts, depression, or anxiety.) This unit provides medical care for patients starting ECT treatments, and testing/diagnosis for patients experiencing changes in mental status (dementia or behavioral changes.) The length of stay on this unit is determined by patient need and may vary from a few days to weeks.
The unit has 24-hour nursing and on-call physicians. Each the patient’s team will include their family members, mental health therapists, clergy, social workers, Certified Nursing Assistants, mental health specialists, discharge planners, pharmacists, dieticians, physical and occupational therapists, and recreational therapists.
Patients spend time developing social skills, daily living skills, and life management skills, as well as participating in therapeutic individual and group sessions directed at improving coping mechanisms and decreasing psychiatric symptoms that are causing distress. Patients work with their team members to develop future goals and establish support networks for continued care after discharge. Although our facility does not provide transportation after hospitalization, we will assist patients in arranging transportation at time of discharge in addition to coordination of psychiatric and therapy appointments upon discharge.
